The VaioPak Group MD Wins Young Entrepreneur of The Year at the Lloyds Growing Business Awards 2015

"Young Entrepreneur of the Year" and VaioPak Group founder Joe Fogel has built a packaging empire out of a simple idea.

Fresh from being bestowed with the Young Entrepreneur of the Year accolade at the Growing Business Awards, Joe Fogel told us all about his inspiring journey so far.

Joe Fogel beat off competition from the likes of Virtue Drinks founder Rahi Daneshmand and JC Social Media's Jodie Cook
VaioPak Group was set up by Fogel nearly eight years ago, originally with the goal of creating a platform for brands to advertise to the general public.

The model worked by first securing the backing of companies, and then providing branded products such as coffee cups to independent shops and restaurants free of change. “It was like putting the brand in the hands of the consumer,” Fogel explained.

However, over the course of the company’s first two years, during which it was entirely self-funded, Fogel noticed that many of the shops and restaurants he was providing branded packaging to were actually after innovative items that each were willing to pay for.

It was this demand that led Fogel and his team to focus on being more of a food packaging company – rather than one which was putting brands on the side of sourced packaging.

Production was initially done by going out to China and finding a factory. However, four years ago Fogel formed a partnership with a factory in Ireland. It is there that VaioPak now produces around 80 per cent of its packaging.

The VaioPak MD Wins Small Business Leader 2014, The Guardian

Joe is a natural leader with entrepreneurial vision. He has continually reacted to developing trends and opportunities in the marketplace to drive a company from inception to a turnover approaching £5m in just seven years.

Joe ran the company single handedly for two years, starting as a platform for businesses to spread their marketing through a network of retailers. This rapidly grew and diversified into capturing the market’s huge demand for bespoke foodservice packaging, to form the VaioPak Group umbrella.

We now have a portfolio which includes M&S, Kraft, Yorkshire Tea, Red Bull, Kenco, Monster and Audi, among many other smaller independents.

Joe sets himself apart with his instinctive vision and foresight. Leadership isn’t something you can teach, but something that’s achieved by setting clear vision in an exemplary manner.

Joe’s overwhelming dedication and commitment inspires me to always strive to achieve more. He is continually seeking opportunities and forming relationships to drive the business further forward, while investing time in his team to develop this same higher-level thinking.

Joe is a true example of how hard work, commitment and inspirational leadership can forge not only a successful business, but also a successful team of people. I have a lot to thank Joe for, and I look forward to developing further under his leadership.
